Drum n’ Bass | Jungle

Drum & Bass (D&B) and Jungle are high-energy genres that evolved from UK rave culture in the early 1990s, rooted in breakbeat, reggae, hip-hop, and sound system traditions.

Jungle emerged first, characterized by fast-paced breakbeats (typically around 160–170 BPM), heavy basslines, and reggae/dub samples. It often incorporates MCing, chopped “Amen” breaks, and a raw, urban edge, reflecting the multicultural landscape of UK cities. Artists like Shy FX and LTJ Bukem helped define its rhythmic intensity and street-level spirit.

Drum & Bass followed closely, refining Jungle’s chaotic energy into a more polished, genre-flexible form. With powerful sub-bass, precise drum programming, and atmospheric textures, D&B includes diverse subgenres like liquid, neurofunk, and techstep. It’s known for both its dancefloor force and cinematic sound design, with pioneers like Goldie and Roni Size pushing its evolution.

Both genres continue to thrive—fusing underground grit with global innovation and reshaping electronic music across generations.
