A June All Dayer

Saturday 28th June was the All Day DJ Session at The Black Bouy pub in Wivenhoe, on a gloriously hot and sunny summer day. The sound system was fired into life at 12 noon with the Reggae Rumble boys playing 3 hours of sumptuous Reggae sounds from across the ages. Roots, Ska, dancehall, Dub, and every nuance in between. It was a perfectly relaxed 3 hours, the scene being set by Jonnie, Harry and Coops, for a very chilled family day in the sun with cold beverages, gorgeous burgers, in a great setting. The covered ‘Barn’ area the DJ rig was set up in provided an almost Jamaican feel being built from timber with lights festooning the ceiling and the sweet Reggae sounds were music to thine ears.

As a self proclaimed ‘Transition artist’ between Reggae Crew and Funk Infusion Crew, Elchampo followed Coops with an at times eclectic selection of chilled indie remixes, soulful pop and even a little Grinderman thrown in. The silly idiot did throw himself around behind the decks in the full heat of the afternoon, an act for which he paid for not half an hour later. (lots of Guinness may have played a small part).
Elchampo’s naïve enthusiasm was replaced by the steady hands of stalwart DJ and event organiser Bazz Briggs. His blend of soul, funk, disco, dance took the second half of the day in the right direction for the evening party mode and enticed a few merry punters out of the blazing sun and onto the shady dancefloor, having had a fill of cold libations to blast away those inhibitions.

All Day DJ Session in the The Barn @ Black Bouy pub

The next 3 hours hosted by DJ’s Ren, Shoesy and Skills7 was a riot of sound with outstanding disc jockey skills on show from local turntable heroes. Brazilian sounds, chilled Hip Hop, Acid Jazz , break beats, scratching, funky ska filled sounds flooded the evening.

So despite a handful of noise complaints, expertly tackled by Will and Baz who pinned up an ‘allegedly’ Sonically Impervious black cloth across the back of the barn, the All Day DJ Session went swimmingly. Reports still came in of the sound still being audible across the entire town but the reports of furniture in houses vibrating stopped coming in when the magic black cloth went up. The venue is fantastic for this type of event, and if you have never been for a beverage at The Black Bouy then I suggest you do so very soon. The burgers are heavenly, your humble correspondent (Elchampo none the less) was so impressed by it I have mentally listed it as the best burger ever eaten.
Wivenhoe is a beautiful Essex town, tiny meandering streets with lovely period buildings and The Black Bouy is a gem of a public house nestled in the heart of it just a short walk from the water front where the river Colne meets and merges with the sea.
Like to thank the proprietors of The Black Bouy for hosting this DJ only event, rumour has it there more coming in the not too distant future……
