The Movement Sessions Friday 13th June
The inaugural Movement Sessions erupted onto the Colchester Scene last night promising selections by 3 DJ’s from New Wave, Post Punk, Alternative Dance, Grunge and Indie. But it delivered so much more.
As it transpired, we were treated to 4 DJ’s and a far wider spectrum of sonic delights, old and new.
Hosted on top floor of Three Wise Monkeys, (part of the venue that your humble correspondent had never stepped foot in bizarrely), I walked in on the last knockings Black Grape, the last track from the opening set by DJ Will, and unexpected addition to the line up. Baz took the reigns straight after and provided a banging set opening with the extended Dub version of The Cure’s ‘Pictures of You’, and spanned everything from Blondie, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Kasabian and Fluke. Baz set a high tempo theme for the rest of the night and something Chelsey Paige felt obliged to continue…

…and continue she did with an opening banger and former Christmas No1 (thanks to a mini cultural revolution some years back to prevent XFactor getting yet another Xmas Chart Topper, power to the people!) and a cult classic ‘Killing in the Name’ by the legendary Rage Against The Machine. Chelsey followed this up with similar high octane tunes from acts such as Limp Biscuit, Alt-J but also interspersed with a timeless classic from Dire Straits ‘Money for Nothing’, a brave choice that went down well with the punters.
Next up for our delectation was Rich DQ who brought out a crazy mix of tracks from the likes of Jessie Ware, Cypress Hill, Depth Charge, Death in Vegas and many more well-chosen and beautifully mixed songs from across the musical spectrum.

Then it turned into a free for all with all 4 DJ’s (Will back from a quick trip to the Brew House for some high volume Belgium beers to boost his fortitude no doubt) pushing and shoving each other to get on the jog wheels in an attempt to out do each other with crazy, wonderous and noisy tracks. They ended up agreeing 2 songs each then move on, like a tag team pushing out The Jam, Cage The Elephant, Dandy Warhols, Nena’s ‘99 Red Balloons’, Franz Ferdinand, The Vapors. The result was fab and all 4 integrated with each other’s eccentric tastes in music superbly.
Your humble Correspondent left everyone to it at about 10:30, being old, knees aching and having to get up early next day, but it looked like the crew and the small crowd were showing no sign of slowing up.
So, a tremendous first edition of The Movement Sessions, and I highly recommend music fans from all manner of tastes and dirty secrets make sure they attend the next one..

Queuing up to get their 2 songs in .
